Terra Nova National Park was established in 1957 and was the first National Park in Newfoundland and Labrador. Terra Nova also protects an area containing remnants of the Beothuk Nation, as well as many of the early pioneer European settlements in the region. Wildlife protected by the park range from small to large land mammals, migratory birds, and various marine life. Inland areas consist of rolling forested hills, exposed rock faces, and bogs, ponds and wetlands. The coastline varies from cliffs and exposed headlands to sheltered inlets and coves, contributing to Newfoundland's prime recreational boating area. The park's seacoast consists of several rocky "fingers" jutting into Bonavista Bay along an area stretching from just north of Port Blandford to the vicinity of Glovertown. Terra Nova's landscape is typical of the northeast coast of Newfoundland, but with remnants of the Appalachian Mountains contributing to widely varied and rugged topography throughout the region. The park takes its name from the Latin name for Newfoundland it is also the original Portuguese name given to the region. Terra Nova National Park is located on the east coast of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, along several inlets of Bonavista Bay. Lumbering and fishing began in the park area in the late 1700s, after colonization, and evidence of these activities can still be found. The teeming waters of Bonavista Bay and Newman Sound have also attracted fishermen for hundreds of years, and some of Newfoundland's oldest settlements were located in what is now the park. The park shows evidence of Paleo-Eskimo, Dorset, Maritime Archaic and Beothuk cultures all are now extinct. Numerous peat bogs provide an ideal environment for orchids and pitcher plants, sprouting from a mat of sphagnum moss. Introduced in 18, moose now thrive, and are often seen grazing along the Trans-Canada Highway. Caribou, once common in this part of Newfoundland, are still occasionally spotted. ![]() Inland, the boreal forest, composed mainly of black spruce and balsam fir, is home for native species, including beaver, meadow vole, black bear, otter and lynx, and introduced species such as common shrew, snowshoe hare, mink and moose. Bald eagles frequent the area and nest here. The rocky shoreline and teeming waters support colonies of common tern, herring gulls and crevice-nesting black guillemots. Icebergs and whales can often be seen from shore vantage points. Island-sprinkled bays and deep fjords indent the coastline. The park's rocky headlands, drumlins, till deposits and numerous ponds show the influence of glacial activity on the landscape. Terra Nova is the Latin form of the name of the island, Newfoundland.
